Hackney Carriage vehicles

Apply for a Hackney Carriage vehicle licence

A Hackney Carriage vehicle must:

  • Have a meter fitted by an approved person. It must use the tariff set by Fenland District Council. The tariff is set by Fenland District Council's Cabinet on behalf of the taxi trade
  • Have an illuminated roof sign which follows current policy. This means the general public will recognise the vehicle as a taxi
  • Use the meter for all journeys in the district
  • Not charge more than the maximum fare

Documents checklist

Before you apply, please ensure you have these documents saved and ready to upload during the online process:

  • Insurance Certificate / Cover Note / Fleet Cover Certificate
  • V5 Document / New Keeper Slip / Bill of Sale
  • Vehicle Compliance Test - Passed status
  • Meter Calibration Certificate - Hackney Carriage Vehicle Meter Certificate (PDF, 47 KB). If you have questions about the certificate, please contact:

We will check your vehicles' MOT details online. Your MOT Certificate must be dated less than 30 days at the time you submit your application. 


Vehicle compliance test

Prior to submitting your application you need to book a vehicle compliance with our approved contractor - Crowsons Motors, 121 Sutton Rd, Leverington, Wisbech PE13 5DR

Bookings can be made by telephone - 01945 589777 (operating hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm).

When taking your vehicle for a compliance test, please ensure:

  • It has appropriate roof signage on
  • Vehicle plate is attached to the rear of the vehicle

How to Apply

Licence issued

Following validation of your application and satisfactory results of any checks, we will produce your new vehicle plate and contact you to inform it's ready to be collected. A copy of your paper licence will be emailed to you. All plates must be returned to us within 7 days of collecting the new plates or the expiry date.
