The community has an important role in influencing the reservoir plan.

Anglian Water and Cambridge Water have announced 'Phase Two' consultation starts on 30 May 2024.

Planning process and timeline

This reservoir qualifies as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP).

The applicants must follow the procedures set out in the Planning Act 2008 which provides the framework for how major projects are developed and consented.

They will apply to the Planning Inspectorate, which acts on behalf of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), for permission to build the reservoir.

The application will be considered by the Planning Inspectorate during an 'examination', likely to last six months. After examination, the Planning Inspectorate will issue a recommendation to the Secretary of State who will then make a final decision as to whether the project is consented.

Subject to the consultation and planning process, construction of the reservoir could begin in 2029, with plans for it to open to the public between 2039 and 2041.

More information on the project and consultation can be found at Fens Reservoir website.
