The Licensing Committee
has responsibility for taxis, gaming, entertainment, food and
alcohol sales, market and street trading and miscellaneous
licensing. During 2005, the Committee took over responsibility for
liquor licensing when the responsibility transferred from the
Licensing Justices to District Councils under the Licensing Act
2003. This Act reformed the existing licensing arrangements for
alcohol, public entertainment, cinemas, theatres and the provision
of late night refreshments. Licensing activities are now based upon
the following four licensing objectives: * the prevention of crime
and disorder * public safety * the prevention of public nuisance *
the protection of children from harm.
