New parkrun launches in Wisbech

Runners, joggers and walkers from all over Fenland joined together in Wisbech Park last weekend for the launch of a new parkrun.

The free, fun, and friendly 5k community event was organised by a team of local volunteers under the national 'parkrun' brand.

Following the launch on Saturday, August 19, which saw 129 participants and 25 volunteers taking part, the parkrun will return every Saturday at 9am.

The weekly event is designed to be accessible to all, with all ability levels welcome. Participants are encouraged to walk, jog or run at a pace that suits them. A separate 2k junior parkrun, suitable for ages 4 to 14 years old, also takes place every Sunday.

Volunteers and participants at the starting line, including (from left to right) Cllr Nick Meekins, Cllr Susan Wallwork, Mayor of Wisbech Cllr Peter Human, Cllr Alex Miscandlon and Cllr Sidney Imafidon.

Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Fenland District Council's portfolio holder for leisure said: "Exercising in a group setting like parkrun not only boosts physical health but also creates a supportive community where individuals thrive together, fostering motivation and a sense of belonging that lasts far beyond the finish line."

"No matter where you are on your personal fitness journey or your ability level, you'll find a supportive community to help you achieve your goals at your local parkrun."

Those interested in joining for the first time are encouraged to register for free online and get their unique scannable barcode, which allows you to participate and receive a finish time. More information, including a course description and route, can be found on the parkrun website at: www.parkrun.org.uk/wisbech

The newly launched event joins a range of parkrun and junior parkrun events already in place across Fenland, including weekly events at West End Park in March and Manor Field in Whittlesey.

Chairman of the Council and joint Event Director of Wisbech parkrun, with his wife Sara, Cllr Nick Meekins said: "Many hours of work and planning have gone into getting this inaugural event set up, so we're absolutely thrilled that the first run has been such a huge success."

"This event wouldn't be possible without our wonderful volunteers, so we would greatly encourage anyone who is interested in helping out to step forward and join the team."
