Wisbech Park café and pavilion a step closer

A project to create a new pavilion in Wisbech Park, including upgraded and accessible toilets and a café, took another step towards fruition this week.

Fenland District Council's Cabinet agreed to invest in the project to ensure it becomes reality, when it met on Thursday 16 March.

After the meeting, Cllr Peter Murphy, portfolio holder for environment, said: "Wisbech Park is an important asset in Fenland for residents and visitors.

"We're focusing a lot of effort into making the park as good as it can be for the local community with a new Splashpad last year, recent investment in planting new trees, imminent investment in exciting new play equipment and a commitment to deliver this community pavilion.

"It'll be a valuable space for people visiting the park, including those with disabilities who will benefit from a Changing Places toilet.

"We've worked hard to secure sizeable grants and investment from partners to make this project happen and we're determined to retain the benefits for the people of Wisbech."

Partners already committed to investing in the project include Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA), Cambridgeshire County Council and central Government, via its Changing Places Fund - to support the delivery of larger accessible toilets that include hoists and adult-sized changing benches.

It is hoped a contract for delivery of the project will be awarded by the end of this month (March) with hopes for it to be open by 2024.

The pavilion will replace aged existing toilets at the park and provide a community space and café.

Details of the exact proposed investment from Fenland District Council cannot be made public yet due to the potential of impacting on an ongoing tendering process for the construction of the pavilion.
