Council Tax rebate to help with your energy bills
Local councils across the country are preparing to support the rollout of a government-funded tax rebate that is being issued in response to soaring energy prices.
The Government has announced that an Energy Bill Rebate (payment) will be provided to households in England in late April to early May 2022 to help protect residents from rising energy costs. This includes a one-off payment of £150 to most households in Council Tax bands A-D. This won't have to be repaid.
The rebate will be payable to households in bands A-D in England which are liable for Council Tax on 1 April 2022. This includes those whose bill is £0 owing to an existing award of Council Tax support, as well as to certain exempt dwellings.
If you don't know which band your property is in, look on your latest Council Tax bill or Check your council tax band online - GOV.UK.
The rebate will not be payable in respect of empty or second homes.
When will I receive this payment?
If you are eligible and have already been paying your Council Tax by Direct Debit, we will make the one-off payment straight into the same bank account. This will happen in late April or early May. You don't need to do anything else.
Please note, we cannot guarantee that anyone signing up to a new Direct Debit will get the rebate within this same timescale. This is because we must take your first Council Tax bill payment using those new direct debit details to verify your account.
If you are not already paying your Council Tax by Direct Debit, you'll need to claim the rebate. This may take longer. We will contact you to let you know how to claim.
You can set up a Direct Debit to pay your Council Tax today. It's a quick, easy and safe way to pay.
The £150 rebate will not be shown on your bill nor will it be credited to your Council Tax account.
Other help available
The Government has said there will be a discretionary scheme for people with homes in Council Tax bands E to H, and also people who don't need to pay Council Tax but are still affected by high energy bills. When we know more about the discretionary scheme, we'll update our Council Tax webpage.
