Get ready to celebrate Fenland's pandemic heroes!

Community heroes who went above and beyond during the Covid pandemic are among those to be honoured next week when the annual Pride in Fenland Awards return for their 14th year.

Pride in Fenland

This year, entries flooded in from residents across the district keen to shine a light on those who make an incredible difference to the lives of others and their local community.

Organised by Fenland District Council and the Fenland Citizen newspaper, this year's awards will once again be held online. The ceremony will premiere on the Council's YouTube channel at 7pm on Tuesday, 16 November - so, tune in and watch your local heroes celebrated! Viewers can also click the bell icon on the video to receive a reminder shortly before the event begins.

The awards will be presented by Cllr Sam Clark, the Council's Portfolio Holder for Communities, and Cllr Maureen Davis, Pride in Fenland judge and ward member for Doddington and Wimblington, with the Special Judges' Award being presented by Jeremy Ransome, Editor for the Fenland Citizen.

There were some small changes to the categories this year to allow for more nominations related to the coronavirus pandemic response. The categories are:

  • Community Group
  • Good Friend
  • Young Person in the Community

The Special Judges' Award is chosen by the Fenland Citizen from the nominees of all the above categories.

Cllr Clark said: "This year's awards will celebrate all those who donated time, supported others and rallied communities throughout the pandemic, recognising their acts of kindness and say a big 'thank you' to them all. It's thanks to these selfless Covid heroes that our district has been able to move forward during these difficult times.

"I'd like to thank everyone who voted - the quality of the nominations has been outstanding! When you watch the ceremony and listen to the highlights of those nominations you will understand why I can say with some confidence that Fenland's unsung heroes are truly amazing people and thoroughly deserve the recognition they will receive."

Cllr Davis added: "The Pride in Fenland Awards is one of the highlights of our year here in Fenland, celebrating the groups and individuals who quietly go about transforming people's lives all year round. This year we're thanking those that have done this despite the pandemic and contributed to making past 18 months that little bit easier for everyone."
