A much loved transport service for Wisbech residents is now set to carry on following continued support from local residents.
Originally due to end in March 2020, the Wisbech Tesco Bus service is now able to continue for at least another 12 months.
This has been achieved thanks to an increase in passenger numbers and by focusing the service on the more popular morning and midday times.
A revised service will launch on Monday, April 6, when the Wisbech Retail Park will also be added to the bus route, providing passengers with better access to more shops, including Poundworld, Iceland, Sports Direct, B&M, Cancer Research and the new Costa Coffee.
The Wisbech Tesco Bus: Service 68 is currently supported by Section 106 Developer Funding from the development of the Tesco site on Cromwell Road. This funding was initially provided in 2015 to deliver transport to the site and support a service for up to three years, but the success and adaptation of the services means it can continue for longer.
Local community transport provider FACT operates the service, which was designed through Fenland District Council's Wisbech Bus Service Project, and was introduced following the withdrawal of the Tesco 66 service by Stagecoach in 2016.
Councillor Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council's Portfolio Holder for Transport, said: "The continuation of this service will ensure that the positive effect it has on our local economy will continue to be felt.
"The role the service plays in our community can also not be understated. Providing improved accessibility to residents, in particular the older members of our community, can offer substantial benefits to their quality of life and individual wellbeing."
The new timetable can be viewed online now at www.fact-cambs.co.uk and printed copies will be available at Horsefair Information Point, Tesco Customer Service Desk, Wisbech Library and on the bus from 24th March.
