Nature and Wildlife

Peacock butterfly on a blackthorn hedge

Even in Fenland's man-made landscape, formed by intensive agriculture and drainage, we still have many pockets in our countryside and urban areas where wildlife can thrive. These include nature reserves, parks and open spaces, allotments, orchards, drainage ditches, and our own domestic gardens.

Our Breathing Places District

Fenland District Council has signed up as a Breathing Places District and are working in partnership with the BBC to help wildlife across the district.

In the last year, we've been doing tree planting, bug hunts, creating mini-beast homes and nature trails across the district. Keep an eye on our Calendar (see the Related Pages link to the right of this webpage) for nature activities near you or check out information below if you'd like help with an event or project in your area.

Lattersey Local Nature Reserve

We are working closely with the Wildlife Trust and Whittlesey Town Council to find out what you think of Lattersey Nature Reserve and how we can improve it for everyone over the coming years. Go to www.wildlifebcnp.org to fill in our survey (from 19th April) or come along to the Open Day on 31st May 2010 from 2-5pm.

Tree O'Clock

Well done to everyone who took part in the BBC's Tree O'Clock challenge on 5th December 09. One morning's great work by everyone involved has resulted in an extra 1420 tress across our district.

Click on Tree O'Clock in the Related Pages link to the right for more details of how we all did.

Create Your Own Nature Space

There's lots you can do in your own garden or with local groups to help birds, animals, plants and garden friendly insects. If you would like to attract more wildlife to your garden or local area, check out the Your Nature Spaces related page link to the right.

Visiting Our Green Spaces

You will often see wildlife in village greens, parks and recreation grounds, and our cemeteries are often great sanctuaries to wildlife in urban areas too. The Parks and Open Spaces under Related Pages will take you to information on the open areas in our towns and villages.

There are also several nature reserves that you can visit in Fenland:

  • Ring's End Local Nature Reserve
  • Lattersey Local Nature Reserve
  • Norwood Road nature reserve
  • Gault Wood
  • The Ouse Washes and Welney Wetland Centre
  • The Nene Washes

The External Links to the right will take to external websites with information on where the sites are, what you can see, where and when you can visit and who to contact if you want to find out more.

Volunteering with Local Nature Groups

There are various active local groups involved in nature conservation within the district. The External Links to the right will take to external websites for some of these groups, but contact us if you would like to know who's active in your local area.
