Fenland District Council's Emergency Planning Team develops Plans, Policies and Procedures to ensure that in the event of an emergency or incident, residents of the Fenland area will experience as little disruption as possible.

The work undertaken by the Emergency Planning Team is guided by a number of Acts of Parliament, the most significant being the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 identifies three broad categories of emergencies which are detailed below, it also lists a number of duties that local authorities like Fenland District Council must comply with to ensure that they are as prepared as possible.

An event or situation, which threatens serious damage to human welfare
An event or situation, which threatens serious damage to the environment
War, or terrorism, which threatens serious damage to security
Civil Contingencies Act 2004
  • To assess the risk of a number of emergencies and use the results inform their work;
  • To create emergency Plans, Policies and Procedures;
  • To identify and address Business Continuity Management issues;
  • To inform the public about emergency planning matters;
  • To share any information with other local responders to improve co-ordination;
  • To work alongside other agencies to improve efficiency;
  • To provide advice and assistance to businesses and voluntary organisations about Business Continuity Management
