Street Cleansing
Street Cleansing & Litter Clearance
The Council is responsible for the sweeping of streets and removal of litter on the Public Highway and Council land.
The Council's streets are divided into areas of priority for cleansing, depending on the volume of traffic, pedestrians using the streets each day and the number of commercial premises. The more frequently the road is used, the more often it will be swept.
There is a Code of Practice for Litter that is part of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, which gives response timescales for an area to be cleaned when it has fallen below an acceptable level. The minimum fine for littering is £2,500 .
If you have any further queries regarding the Street Cleansing Service please contact the Call Centre on 01354 654321 or email litter@fenland.gov.uk or use this online form or visit one of the Local One Stop Shops.

Litter and Refuse on Private Property
Where litter or flytipping is a problem on private land the owner or occupier of the land is then duty bound to keep it free of litter. Local authorities can serve a Notice on landlords failing to keep their area free of litter and refuse. This ensures that the owner must clean up the area within a given period of time or face a fine if the offence continues.
