War Memorials

Here's where you can find out more information about war memorials maintained by the council

Soldier War Memorial

Following World War I, war memorials were erected in most towns and villages in recognition of the great effort and loss that the Country had sustained during those previous 4 years.

Today, these memorials also act as a reminder to everybody of the sacrifices made by previous generations. Additional memorials were later erected to honour those who gave their lives in World War II.

Across the country, services are held and wreaths are laid each year on Armistice day (11 November) in memory of those who have given their lives in all the conflicts in which our Nation has been involved.  Many people will realise that 2014 marks the centenary of World War I.

Fenland District Council maintains the four memorials located in each of the Fenland market towns of Chatteris, March, Whittlesey and Wisbech. If you are looking for information about the war memorials situated in the other Fenland villages, these are looked after by the parish council responsible for that area.

A copy of the Fenland District Survey carried out in the early 1990s is held at the Wisbech and Fenland Museum and includes details of the 106 memorials located in Fenland.

These pages display information about the 4 memorials which are maintained by Fenland District Council. To view the information about your chosen memorial please go to the corresponding link. Each page displays a photo of the war memorial, the epitaph, its location and where you can find out more information about the memorial and the names displayed on it.
