Community Car Schemes

Community car schemes offer organised lifts for people who need to make essential medical or social journeys and cannot get there by other means. Schemes tend to prioritise journeys to appointments at the surgery or hospital, optician and dentist, but will also provide transport for visiting friends and relatives and perhaps shopping, so enabling elderly, isolated or vulnerable people to get out and about.

Journeys are usually arranged by telephone and all the drivers are volunteers. Passengers make a financial contribution to the cost of their journey and there is a minimum charge. All journeys are subject to availability of drivers and people are asked to give as much notice as possible.

There are schemes covering every town and village throughout the district. As they are all independent they do operate slightly differently in some respects and people who wish to use them are advised to contact them for further information in advance.
