What is benefit fraud?

Benefit fraud costs the country about £2 billion a year. This equates to around £80 a year for each household in Great Britain. This money could be spent on essential public services and those who need it most. The prevention, detection and investigation of Benefit Fraud in Fenland is dealt with by a dedicated team of professionally trained investigators who undertake investigations into allegations of benefit fraud received from members of the public, officers and members of the Council, other Government Departments and from the results of National and Local Data Matching.

We work closely with officers from other agencies including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and will conduct joint investigations when the alleged fraud also affects other benefits such as Income Support or Pension Credit.

Fenland District Council is committed to protecting public funds and securing the benefit system by ensuring that the right amount of Housing and Council Tax Benefit is paid to the right person at the right time. Those who abuse the system could end up with a criminal record.
