Nature and Wildlife
How we look after the landscape, and what you can do to help.
Even in Fenland's man-made landscape, formed by intensive agriculture and drainage, we still have many pockets in our countryside and urban areas where wildlife can thrive. Find out what you can do to encourage wildlife and how we can help.
Create Your Own Nature Space
There are lots of things you can do in your own garden or with local groups to help birds, animals, plants and garden friendly insects. If you would like to attract more wildlife to your garden or local area, check out the Your Nature Spaces related link to the right.
Visiting Our Green Spaces
You will often see wildlife in village greens, parks and recreation grounds, and our cemeteries are often great sanctuaries to wildlife in urban areas too. There are also several nature reserves that you can visit in Fenland:
- Ring's End Local Nature Reserve
- Lattersey Local Nature Reserve
- Norwood Road Nature Reserve
- Gault Wood
- The Ouse Washes and Welney Wetland Centre
- The Nene Washes
The External Links to the right will take to websites with information on where the sites are, what you can see, where and when you can visit and who to contact if you want to find out more.
Volunteering with Local Nature Groups
There are various active local groups involved in nature conservation within the district. The External Links to the right will take to websites for some of these groups, but contact us if you would like to know who's active in your local area.
How Can We Help You?
At Fenland District Council, we can provide help to individuals, community groups, schools and businesses, including :
- Ideas and advice on how you can encourage wildlife in your area
- Guidance in identifying grant funding you might be eligible for and assistance in completing applications forms
- Help in recruiting volunteers in your local area
