youth achievement awards
Fenland District Council and the Wisbech Standard and Cambs Times newspaper have once agained held a very successful awards ceremony.
We had 31 nominations from across Fenland and the standard was again very high. We assessed each nomination which came in and found that they fitted well into two groups; Community Contribution and Personal Achievement.
The following people were nomination for their Community Contribution and the explanations were put forward by their nominees....
"Brett Holloway is 17 and comes from Wimblington. He volunteers at the Priory Golf Centre between college courses. He actually learnt how to play golf so that he could help other people with special needs who wanted to take part in the sport. Through this he has learnt a great deal. He voluntarily delivers coaching sessions on Wednesday nights for adults with learning difficulties. Doing this has enabled the Academy to accept more members and increase awareness in the project."
"Lauren Frost is 14 and comes from Wisbech. She is a senior member of Centre 4 (a youth centre in Wisbech). For over 6 months she has helped both the staff and club members a great deal. She has taken on more responsibility and gained an immense amount of confidence. Her committment to the youth club has been wonderful".
"Lauren Wymer is 15 and comes from Wisbech. She is a senior member of Centre 4 and is very willing, friendly, committed and helpful. She suppports new members and helps staff with jobs and goes out of her way to assist others".
"Matthew Martin is 16 and comes from Guyhirn. Matthew volunteers at Parson Drove Youth Club and is a senior member. He leads the sports activities and runs the tuck shop. He has also completed training for entry level in youth work. All of this is in his own time".
"Nicola Coates is 15 and comes from Murrow. She supports the younger members of Murrow Youth Club who sometimes feel a bit nervous about meeting new people and joining in".
"Leanne Tompkins is 14 and comes from Murrow. Leanne uses her initiative to her full extent when she volunteers at Murrow Youth Centre. She leads activities and gives support to younger members of the group. Leanne is a senior member and takes on jobs without being asked".
"Jordan is 13 and comes from Wisbech. He has become a senior member of Centre 4 in Wisbech. He has learnt new skills and has used them a great deal in the club and he always has a smile on his face".
"Ben Cunnington is 16 and comes from Parson Drove. He is another senior member member of Centre 4. He travels from Parson Drove to volunteer at the centre and is so reliable and trust worthy that you know is asked he is always willing to help".
"Ryan Turton is 17 and comes from Wisbech. Ryan has progressed well in the last 6 months becoming a volunteer youth worker. He took part in the Boat House photography project run by Fenland District Council, where he gave his views about the building".
"Kelsey Hancock is 14 and comes from Wisbech. She is a very active member of Centre 4 and has been involved in many projects. She is a senior member who has achieved a great deal".
"Jake Burbidge is 16 and comes from Wisbech. He has been volunteering for a long time as a youth worker. He is committed and involves himself admirably. He has gained his Duke of Edinburgh Award for volunteering which has enabled him to meet other people".
"Laura Whitrod, Stephanie Jones, Bethany Freeman, Jordan Milnthorpe, Rebecca Freeman and Emma Goode all come from Guyhirn. They produced a DVD which came as a direct result of the tragic death of one of their schools friends in the village. It prompted Bethany and Jordan to get a group of their friends together, working with the Jam Van from Cambridgeshire County Council to publicise speeding where they live".
In the Personal Achievements Category the following young people were nominated.....
"Shannen Campbell is 15 and comes from Wisbech. She is a member of Fenzone Youth Council and volunteers at Young People March. She attends weekly clubs, running art/crafts sessions with younger children. At disco nights she volunteers her time and is very willing, helpful and committed".
"Oliver Hutton is 14 and comes from Wisbech. He has coped with Spina Bifida since birth, resulting in many operations which causes him pain. He was severely bullied at secondary school resulting in him being removed and now Oliver is home schooled by his mum. Throughout all this he has shown determination and strength beyond his years".
"Charlie-Jean Manders is 16 and comes from March. She is a volunteer at Young People March and is also the acting Chair of Fenzone Youth Council. She contributes to many weekly activities and organises events such as litter picking, cleaning the centre, raising money etc to name but a few."
"Gareth Usher is 15 and comes from March. He volunteers at Young People March is a member of Fenzone Youth Council. He contributes to many weekly activities at the Youth Club. Making decisions on how young people can make a difference to the community through Fenzone".
"Adam Stockbridge is 12 and comes from March. He is the youngest volunteer at Young People March. He is a member of Fenzone Youth Council. He attends weekly and helps with the younger members. He contributes to many activities within the youth club and the wider Fenland community".
"Lauren Goode is 15 and comes from March. She is a valued member of the volunteer staff at Young People March, contributing to many activities including face painting, art and crafts and helping with younger members".
"Matthew Halmshaw is 13 and comes from Chatteris. Having attended anti-bullying meetings for 2 years he has made an outstanding contribution to the Anti-Bullying Council. Promoting the work within Cromwell Community College. He has made presentations to his peers producing an anti-bullying charter."
"Holly Ray is 13 and comes from Manea. She has also attended the anti-bullying meetings for over 2 years. She is committed to helping stamp out bullying in schools and has worked with Matthew on presentations to her peers. She has also contributed to the anti-bullying charter".
"Kyle Bushell is 15 and comes from Wisbech. He organised himself and 10 friends to cycle 38.9 miles dressed in pink in aid of Breast Cancer relief. One friend had never ridden and bike before so Kyle taught him".
"Adam Rooks is 17 and comes from Wisbech. He has helped at the new weekly multi-sport sessions for young people with disabilities in Wisbech. In doing this he has personally taken on training, engaged with young people taking part and shown great maturity and enthusiasm. A positive role model".
"Charlie Stevens is 15 and comes from Coates. He has come forth in the national judo championships and has been graded to the highest junior grade and is one of the youngest in the country. He has trained with GB Judo Squad for the Olympics and all of this is on top of a promising county rugby career".
"Jonathan Hastings is 15 and comes from Whittlesey. He has been competing for a number of years and has recently reached the quarter finals in the European Championships for BMX riding. He has been accepted on the Olympic Development Team for BMX ready for the 2012 Olympics".
"Grant Brown is 16 and comes from Whittlesey. He has been kick boxing for 4 years and recently came 4th in the International Championships in Ireland. He has fought for England and has over 20 trophies. He will take his black belt in June and is going to Manchester to qualify for the World Championships".
We are pleased to announce that Brett Holloway won the Community Contribution category and Oliver Hutton was the overall winner! Well Done Oliver!!!
