YDC Your Council Explained B

England is divided into 9 regions. One of these regions is Cambridgeshire and Fenland forms a district of Cambridgeshire.

Cambridgeshire consists of one county council which is responsible for services such as education, waste management and strategic planning within the county, with 5 district councils responsible for various services.

Fenland District Council is responsible for making decisions on behalf of the local community on a number of issues including planning, parks and open spaces, environmental issues, leisure facilities, refuse collection, land use etc. It provides services in and around the market towns of Whittlesey, Chatteris, Wisbech and March.

Fenland Council has 40 councillors in total, each of whom is elected for a 4-year term to represent the people of Fenland. Councillors are elected by the local community (you can view all of the councillors for each area by clicking on the link on this page).

As community leaders they put forward proposals to improve their ward, which may include bringing together different community groups to develop a case for change.

There are 27 wards within the District and the councillors help to make decisions which improve the lives of people living in the wards.

Nine of these Councillors meet every three weeks at Cabinet meetings to discuss important decisions which effect Fenland. Cabinet is usually open to the public, so if you would like to attend a meeting the sessions take place on a Thursday afternoon at 4p.m. If you are interested in finding out about issues concerning Fenland or if you would like to find out more about local government just drop in!
