Gypsy and Traveller sites
Fenland District Council has a nationally recognised approach to engaging with the Gypsy Traveller community.
With one of the largest Gypsy Traveller populations in the East of England, we have long recognised, and sought to promote, the unique cultural heritage of a community that is the single largest ethnic minority community in the district, and whose links to the area go back many years and many generations.
As a Council, we currently manage five permanent sites, on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council, and one transit site. There are also a large number of private sites, and individual family plots in Fenland.
However living a 'nomadic', or travelling, lifestyle is not the only defining characteristic of the Gypsy Traveller community, which is why a significant number of Gypsy Travellers live in 'bricks and mortar', or housing. This may be out of choice, but in many cases it is also due to the lack of authorised sites.
