Boxing star Jordan Gill's masterclass in Chatteris

Young boxing fans were treated to a masterclass from rising star Jordan Gill when he held an open workout at the New Vision Fitness leisure centre in his home town of Chatteris last Saturday (January 28).

Some even managed to land a few punches on the man who is seen as one of Britain's brightest boxing hopes.

Among them were seven-year-old twins Thomas and Samuel Horsburgh, grandsons of NVF staff member Jon Savage.

Jon said: "Both the boys really enjoyed it, along with all the other children. It was a good workout and Jordan and his team also gave away T-shirts and postcards, which was nice."

Paul Gill, Jordan's father, said: "It all went brilliantly. Jordan has never done an open workout in Chatteris before. We had about 50 people there and 38 of them weren't members of the gym, which is fantastic.

"We want to do all we can to support the centre and get more people involved in sport. Jordan's doing really well and we need someone from around here to make it to the top and inspire a lot of other people.

"The session was also recorded on Facebook and got 3,200 views in 24 hours."

Last June Jordan and Paul visited the centre to present it with two new punch bags and a couple of pairs of boxing gloves. Jordan has also done a warmdown with students at Cromwell Community College.

Saturday's workout was filmed by Anglia News, who are expected to do an item on it tomorrow evening (Friday, February 3) in the run-up to Jordan's latest bout this Saturday.

The 22-year-old is taking on Frenchman Adel Hadjouis at London's Olympia in his first fight at featherweight.

The bout is on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr's IBO super middleweight title clash with Renold Quinlan. It is the first show on ITV's new pay-per-view channel, ITV Box Office, which is expected to pull in several million viewers.

Paul Gill said: "We sold all our tickets for the fight in 24 hours. We're expecting more than 200 people from Chatteris.

"We're hoping Jordan's fight will be shown on TV but you never quite know. It depends on how the other fights on the bill go."
