Walks and talks, churches and chapels, fossils and films: they all feature in next week's Heritage Open days, an annual event held all over the country each September.

More than 30 events are taking place in Fenland on September 8-11. They include several commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and its impact on local people

Councillor Michelle Tanfield, Fenland District Council's Cabinet member responsible for leisure and tourism, said: "All the events are free - they're run entirely by volunteers and there's something for everyone over the four days. I went to quite a few of them last year and it was great fun taking my family.

"They are a great opportunity both for people here in Fenland and visitors from outside to find out more about our fantastic history, architecture and culture.."
