Fond memories and prayers for peace

Council chairman Councillor Carol Cox looks back at 2015 and wishes everyone in Fenland a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year

FDC Chairman Cllr Carol Cox

Cllr Cox said: "As we celebrate the festive season, I look back very fondly on my first year as chairman of Fenland District Council.

"It has been memorable in all sorts of ways. I have been made so welcome by many other councils when I have attended their civic receptions and services.

"I have also enjoyed many other special events held for charity, including Proms in the Park in Rushden and a Victorian murder mystery evening in Boston.

"I was also very honoured to be invited to the American base at RAF Alconburyfor their Independence Day celebrations in July.

"Throughout the year, I have been ably assisted by my deputy, Councillor Kay Mayor, and I much appreciate her support.

"One of the year's highlights was the VJ Day memorial service in August. It was the first time we had held such an event and St Peter and St Paul's church in Wisbech was packed.

"The service was superbly led by Father Paul West and the moving testaments delivered by relatives of those who served in the Far East showed how proud the families were of their forebears and how revered those brave soldiers still are today.

"I recalled that great occasion again earlier this month when we returned to St Peter's for our annual carol service. It was a privilege to stand in the same church where for hundreds of years many generations of Fenland folk have come to worship and pray for peace and goodwill to all men.

"For those of us fortunate to have friends and family with us this year, perhaps we should spare a thought for those who will be alone, and for those in our armed forces who will either be on duty or away from home, trying to maintain that peace and goodwill to all men.

"And this is what I wish for you all this year and forever: peace, goodwill, a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year."
