Get your kicks on (bus) Route 66

Efforts are being made to encourage more people to make use of an improved bus service in Wisbech.

An extra loop has been added to Stagecoach in Norfolk's Route 66 service in May, taking it to Tesco and the Light Cinema in Cromwell Road. But in the five months it has been in operation surprisingly few people have been climbing on board.

The extended service runs every 30 minutes from 8am to 12.30pm and from 2pm until 5.57pm. The route takes it in a circle from the Horsefair bus station.

The buses stop on Ramnoth Road, directly opposite the entrance to the College of West Anglia, and on Weasenham Lane, near the turning into New Drove, with another three stops on Cromwell Road.

In partnership with Tesco and Stagecoach in Norfolk, staff from Fenland District Council's Wisbech Travel Choices project took a stand outside Tesco to help raise awareness of the service.

Local residents and shoppers had the chance to win various prizes, including a hamper donated by Tesco and film tickets provided by the Light Cinema.

Both Councillor Simon King, Fenland District Council's Cabinet member responsible for transport, and Wisbech Mayor Councillor David Hodgson backed the promotional moves.

Cllr King said: "We are trying to spread the word about this service. People who have tried it have given very positive feedback but there are still many who haven't even heard that it's up and running. There is always the danger that if people don't use it, it could be withdrawn."

Cllr Hodgson said: "This is a really useful extra service that I'm sure many more people would use if they knew about it. Leaflets giving all the details are now widely available in the town, including at the one-stop shop and the Tourist Information Centre."

Will Smith, commercial manager at Stagecoach in Norfolk, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Fenland District Council to provide the extension to the 66 Wisbech town service.

"The extended route means that bus travel is now available across more of Wisbech than before, providing access to both the town centre and the recently opened Tesco store and making connecting to Stagecoach services towards King's Lynn and March even easier."
