Views sought on Whittlesey 'extra care' scheme plans

People will have two chances next week to comment on proposals for a new "extra care" scheme for older people in and around in Whittlesey.

Have Your Say

The initial designs for the scheme will go on show at the Manor Centre in the town on August 10 (11am-1pm) and August 11 (4.30-6.30pm).

Feedback will be useful in finalising the plans for a new development of 60 flats in Bassenhally that will provide specialist care for older people, including those living with dementia and other memory-related illnesses.

The scheme has been drawn up by the Axiom housing association in partnership with other health and housing providers. From the outset it has had the active support of Fenland District Council in securing the necessary funding.

Councillor Mike Cornwell, FDC's Cabinet member responsible for health and wellbeing, said: "Older people treasure their independence and that is what extra care schemes like this offer - high quality accommodation closely linked to appropriate health and support services.

"That is a great comfort to families. It also helps to ease the pressure on hospitals by reducing their admissions.

"Next week's consultation events will help to ensure that the design of the scheme takes the views of local people fully into account."

A similar scheme run by the Sanctuary Group in Doddington has proved very popular since opening in 2013.
